Instructions
Step 1: Prep
Heat olive oil in large soup pot.
Peel and dice Onion.
Combine spices and sugar in small bowl.
- Chili powder
- Ground Cumin
- Sugar
- Garlic Powder
- Salt
- Black Pepper
- Ground Cayenne Pepper
Step 2: Cook Onion
Add onion to oil.
Cook 5 minutes.
Stir occasionally.
Step 3: Cook Ground Beef
Add ground beef to pot with cooked onion.
Cook 6-7 minutes until brown.
Stir occasionally.
Add sugar and spice mix.
Step 4: Add Tomatoes & Beans
To pot, add:
- Tomato paste
- Beef broth
- Diced tomatoes
- Dained beans (do not drain if using seasoned beans)
- Tomato sauce
Bring pot to a boil.
Reduce heat to low.
Simmer, uncovered, 20-25 minutes.
Stir occasionally.
Note: Add any additional beans or tomatoes at this stage.
Note: If making a large batch or using crushed tomatoes, simmer for additional time to evaporate excess water.
Step 5: Finish and Serve
Leave pot to simmer on low until ready to serve.
Recommend simmering for at least 1 hour prior to serving.
